Skeletons in the Closet
They left the restaurant to find swarms of reporters waiting outside, but that was no surprise. After all, they were a high-profile couple: she, Tina Starr, the hottest model working the runways, and he, the Motorola XOOM 10.1” 32GB Tablet, a notorious playboy who was known to have quite fashionable tastes in cases himself.
No, the surprise came on their walk home, after posing for several photos and answering a few questions – some for her about her favorite designers to model, some for him about his 720p video playback. They had just turned onto the quiet residential street where stood his tasteful but lavish townhouse, when a voice behind them said, “Mr. XOOM, a word?”
The couple turned around to find a slovenly keyboard and disheveled PC tower. Tina looked at the XOOM nervously. “Don’t worry, babe. I can handle this,” he told her, and then to the others: “Say, it looks like you two could use a nice warm meal.” He reached into his 32GB internal memory, and pulled out a $100 bill. “Here, have something nice on me.”
“We’re not here for, money, sir,” said the Keyboard.
“Do you really not remember us?” asked the Tower.
“Can’t say that I do,” said the XOOM. “But that doesn’t mean we haven’t met. After all, I’m a busy man. Heck, it seems like I spend most of my 10 hours of battery life going to high-profile events. That’s a lot of faces to remember.”
“You ruined us!” yelled the Tower.
Tina gasped. “Alright, guys. C’mon. Let’s calm down here,” said the XOOM.
“There was a time when we were a family,” said the Keyboard. “There was a time we all had to work together to create something called ‘a computer.’ Back then you were just ‘The Monitor.’ But that wasn’t enough for you. So, you took his power and my typing ability, and you said, ‘Hey look, you don’t need those other guys! I got all the Wi-Fi and the applications you could want. It’s all right here behind my 10.1-inch touch screen.’ In short, you betrayed us. You left us destitute and obsolete.”
“You know what, I was willing to be nice,” said the XOOM. “But not any more! Get off my street or I’ll call the police via Google Chat!”
“Fine, we have no more business with you,” said the Keyboard.
“We’re going to the press, and we’re telling them the truth: that you’re not some hot new thing; you’re just a portable, one-piece computer!” shouted the Tower.
And with that the two of them were gone.
Safely inside, Tina poured them each a glass of wine. “How wild! I feared for my life for a moment there,” she said. But the XOOM didn’t respond. He had buried his past to become who he was today, so he had only just begun to fear for his life.
