We upconverted our DVDs—up yours!

If you have to convert in one direction or the other, up is totally the way to go

You’re making cost/benefit analyses pretty much all day, every day, even if you don’t realize it. Some of them involve conscious deliberation, like when you take ten minutes in the aisle at the drugstore comparing expensive specialty skin care products with a 24-pack of Zest.

Other times they’re almost completely unconscious, like when you go for hundreds of days in a row without doing a single sit-up.

Occasionally such decisions are pretty tough. When you’re bidding on eBay, maybe it’s easy to decide that a particular back issue of FANGORIA is worth five dollars to you. But OK, how about $5.50? Or $6.00? Or $7.00?

“It’s just another 50 cents,” you tell yourself a few times—and soon, before you know it, you’ve paid $34.75 for someone else’s recycling.

On the other hand, sometimes it’s super easy. Like “duh” easy. Like smack-yourself-in-the-face easy.

Take this Philips upconverting DVD player. Now, a lot of people will say “upconversion is not the same as true, high-definition video, dude. I don’t want that. I want a Blu-Ray player. They’re way better.”

These people—despite saying “dude” too much, which makes them sound stupid—are absolutely right. This thing is no Blu-Ray player. Then again, no Blu-Ray player can be had for thirty bucks, either. Shoot, that’s about what you’d pay for some Blu-Ray discs. This is pretty nice for so cheap, and pretty cheap for so nice.

It’s cheap enough, for example, that you can easily justify getting one to pinch-hit for your Xbox 360 in DVD-playing situations. The Philips is nice and quiet, unlike the Xbox 360 playing DVDs. Confidential to Xbox 360: All that whirring and sputtering is cute when Speed Buggy does it, but it’s annoying as the dickens when you’re trying to watch a movie.

Yeah, you have to weigh the benefits against the cost. Think of it like this. There will always be people who buy a band’s complete, six-CD box set. This Philips DVD player is for those of us who, instead, decide that the Sound Saver Greatest hits collection has the only two songs we like anyway.
