There’s a certain line of mp3 players out there—and you can probably guess which ones we’re talking about (rhymes with “rye squad”)—that look like they belong at the MoMA. Or at least the MoMA store. They’ve got this… what? Elegance to them. The Chicklet-smooth chassis. The simple, unique yet intuitive UI. They seem like they must have sprung, wholly realized, out of the inspired imagination of some lone genius artist-cum-engineer, like Athena popping out of Zeus’ head full-grown. (In our fantasy, the designer is played by Anne Hathaway, rowr. No, not the Shakespeare one, the hot one.)
Here’s the thing, though. While form follows function ‘round and ‘round the clickwheel forever until they eat each other like Ouroboros—uh, how do you change the battery?
The Sandisk Sansa e250 Rhapsody is for the battery-changers among us. The tinkerers. Those of us who have always considered “practical” the very highest available word of praise. You see us around sometimes—we drive used cars. We wear vests with lots of pockets on them.
Not only can we change our Sansas’ batteries, we can listen to FM radio signals on them. We can make voice memo recordings on them. We can expand our memory with MicrSD cards. We can sync with subscription music services for those recordings we want to hear, but not buy. (Stand-up comedy records!) We can make EQ adjustments.
Yeah, the “rye squad” is a beautiful item, it’s true. But some of us are living a whole different lifestyle from all that. A lifestyle in which looks don’t count for nothin’.
And it’s a good thing, too, because most of us are really homely. Like double-take homely, bordering on ugly.
