LIL’ LUCY: Boy, I sure am bored. Wonder what Stubby’s doing right now?

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy sliding down the bannister with a big smile.

LIL’ LUCY: Oh, boy! Ol’ Stub sure will be up to something fun, I bet!

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy is walking down the street towards Stubby’s house.

LIL’ LUCY: Yes, sir! It’s always fun when Stubby’s around!

SCENE: Stubby’s front porch. Stubby is raking leaves and looks mad. Stubby’s mother is leaning out the window.

SCENE: Stubby glares at the window. Lil’ Lucy looks surprised.

I just wanted to go out with the fellas because we’re building a clubhouse and they said “Stubby, we need your adjustable wrench!” and I said “Sure, fellas, I’ve got a pivoting ratchet too, you know!” and they said “Wow, Stub, and if you bring your 50 bits and 30 sockets, we’ll probably make you Club President!” and I said “Wow, golly, fellas!” and they said “Yeah, but the President has to be on time for the meetings!” and I said “Don’t you worry, you can count on me!” and now my STOOPID MOM IS MAKING ME RAKE THESE LEAVES AND I’LL PROBABLY END UP A COMMUNIST!

SCENE: Stubby’s Mother is glaring out the window again. Stubby looks chastized. Lil’ Lucy is laughing behind her hands.

STUBBY’S MOTHER: What was that, dear?

STUBBY: Um, just raking aloud, Mother.

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy watches Stubby rake. He’s furious.

LIL’ LUCY: Stub, I know you prefer working in hard-to-reach spaces with your special flex-head, but a few leaves won’t be so bad! Here, I’ll grab the other rake and help you. Then you can let me go hang out the club with the fellas!

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy grabs another rake. Stubby looks devious as he watches her.

LIL’ LUCY: Oh, boy, if you’re President, they’ll have to do what you say! And that means, maybe you can even make me a member! Of course, it won’t happen overnight, I understand, but even a trial basis would be something if-

STUBBY: (thought balloon) Hmm… if I can convince Lucy to dress as me, maybe Mother won’t ever know… and I can go to the clubhouse with the fellas!

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy is raking the leaves. Stubby gives her a pat on the back.

STUBBY: Hey, Lucy! What a great job! But you’re looking so cold!

LIL’ LUCY: No, I’m fine, I-

SCENE: Stubby puts his coat and hat on Lil’ Lucy. She can’t see because it’s too big.

STUBBY: No way! I’m not letting my friend get cold! Here, take my hat, too!

LIL’ LUCY: But now I can’t see!

STUBBY: It keeps your eyes safe! You don’t want deadly UV rays in your eyes, do you?

SCENE: Stubby looks at Lil’ Lucy. Stubby’s Mother watches him angrily from in the window. He does not see her.

STUBBY: (thought balloon) Oh boy! She looks just like me! Now I can go help the fellas! Better get my three inch extension bar from the treehouse first!

SCENE: Stubby runs toward the treehouse.

STUBBY: Lucy, I’m… uh, feeling a sore throat coming on, so I’m not going to talk for a while. But keep raking! I mean, helping me rake! I’m right beside you!

LIL’ LUCY: Gosh, Stubby! A sore throat! Hope that doesn’t make it hard to give your Presidential speeches!

SCENE: Stubby is in the treehouse, sorting through a box.

STUBBY: I know I put my three inch extension bar somewhere up here!

STUBBY’S MOTHER: (off-panel) Ohh, Stubby! You’ve been such a good boy today, raking all those leaves! So I’m going to let you open one Christmas present early! Go ahead! Pick whatever present you like!

SCENE: Stubby hurries down the ladder.

STUBBY: Oh boy! Oh boy! I know just which one! I’m going to open the big one! I bet it’s a-

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy is wearing Stubby’s coat and hat, looking into an unwrapped gift. Stubby’s Mother looks on happily.

LIL’ LUCY: An authentic World War Two Bathtub Battleship! Wow!

STUBBY’S MOTHER: Yes, dear, all for you. You did such a good job raking today!

SCENE: Stubby is freaking out.

STUBBY: YOW! Mother! But that’s the gift I wanted! How can you give it to Lucy? Can’t you tell that’s her under the coat?

SCENE: Stubby rips his coat of Lil’ Lucy.

SCENE: Stubby covers his face, realizing what he’s just admitted to. His mother looks on, cruelly.

SCENE: Lil’ Lucy is in her bathtub, playing with her new authentic World War Two Bathtub Battleship. Through the window, we can see Stubby raking furiously while tied to the door.

LIL’ LUCY: Yep, I was right! It’s always a fun time with ol’ Stubby!
