The day starts as any other normal day for April.
She yawns, and stretches. She talks herself out of going to the gym, convincing herself that she’ll go later tonight. She walks into the kitchen, her bare feet padding softly on the imitation-bamboo floors. She reaches into the cabinet, standing on her tippy-toes, to reach a bag of Kona coffee beans. She pours a small amount into her coffee grinder and turns it on.
She winces at the sound. She has a headache this morning.
She boils some water in the kettle and makes herself some coffee in her French Press. She likes it this way better; she lives alone, so she doesn’t need one of those fancy coffeemakers with the 10-cup capacity. She gingerly cups the mug in her hands, blowing on the liquid’s surface lightly. She makes her way to her study.
She smiles to herself at calling it a study. It’s just a spare bedroom in her apartment; she just happened to put an IKEA desk in there so she would have a place to use her refurbished HP Pavilion 1TB Desktop PC. It has an AMD Phenom II Quad-Core Processor, 4GB DDR3 System Memory, and 1TB SATA Hard Drive. She’ll never use most of the processing power. It’s basically an Internet machine, as far as April’s concerned. She logs in to check her email.
Her headache’s getting worse.
She reads an email from her mom. She is simultaneously annoyed and overjoyed at the sappy, small-town news from home report that ends in “I LOVE YOU!!!!! :)” She makes a mental note to call her mom that night to say hi. Suddenly her legs are scalding. There’s coffee all over her lap, all over the desk, all over the keyboard, and running down her desktop PC. She’s hit with a blinding pain in her temple. Her vision goes white. She loses her breath. She has the horrific realization that this is real; this is a big deal. She needs help. She lurches out of the chair, desperate to find her cell phone and call for help.
Her muscles are like jelly; they barely register her commands, they give out and lock up and she tumbles to the floor hard, landing on her shoulder. She doesn’t even notice the pain, because all she can feel is a thousand needles working through her eyes, into her skull. April’s headache was brought on by an aneurysm that had burst in her brain. There was no injury, no illness, nothing more than a quirk of genetics; bad evolutionary design.
The doctor will examine her body and console her family with the knowledge that it was a sudden death, and one that unfortunately no one had any way of foreseeing. Her mother will offer the computer to April’s younger brother, now a college freshman. He takes it, and forever feels guilty using it to surf porn in his dorm room.
