Music Monday: House Music

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! House music is a sub-genre about dance. Music about houses, though, crosses every genre! We're gonna prove that today.

Crosby, Still and Nash - Our House

If there's a permutation of the letters C, S, N and Y, Crosby and Stills and Nash and Young have recorded as it. But this song was my first exposure to the band and those two cats in the yard always hold a special place in my heart.

Enter our house and find more music! Come on! DO IT!

Tracie Spencer - This House

Here's a nice example of some house music once the genre became semi-mainstream. You can tell because it tries to become vaguely political and inspiring without committing to one viewpoint over another. That way, anyone could buy it! Trust me, after years at this job, I know viral marketing when I see it.

The Animals - House Of The Rising Sun

This house was dark and sinister, but also exotic and unusual. Perfect for kids who grew up with Pat Boone and Cliff Richard. Also of note: I got to see Eric Burdon (the lead singer) do a live set about two years ago. He wore a hoodie and rapped some new material. I think you can form your own opinion about the show from that.

Talking Heads - Burning Down The House

Just like one room is your bedroom, but all the rooms in a house serve a purpose, so too was David Byrne the most famous Talking Head even though all the other band members were also talented. It's rare you get a band where every member matters. Maybe that's why they never really reappeared once they were gone.

Jungle Brothers - I'll House You

The Jungle Brothers took a variety of unexpected sources and stuffed them all into a highly danceable sack and threw it at the listener. This record was a classic the second it appeared. What's a house without a good foundation?

Let us just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. Post some music about houses, or from the genre of house, or possibly the theme from House M.D.. And see you next week.
