Music Monday: June

by Scott Lydon

Happy Music Monday! It's June, it's June! And it's gonna be not-June before we know it. So let's celebrate what we have while we have it. Today's playlist is full of June songs.

Nina Simone - Memphis In June

I think I covered my love for Nina Simone a couple of weeks ago, so I'll just say instead: this one's for you, dakillabee.

See you after the jump!

Bobby Gentry - Ode To Billy Joe

It was tomorrow, June 3rd, when the narrator of this complex madness went in for her family meal and found out Billy Joe killed himself. Casual dinner time conversation, right? Wonder what was taboo in that household. Maybe just focus on how the music captures that sticky-warm summer feeling of a day when you've got nothing to do but gossip.

The Beatles - I'll Be On My Way

Even heartbreak is survivable on a late summer evening. With so many people out late, there's a better chance to make a new friend! There's plenty of time to grab a late dinner with someone new before the sun vanishes. God bless you, Solstice elves. You do good work.

Soft Machine - Moon In June

Yes, it's more proggy than you'd expect from me, but whatever. Sitting on the grass watching a band overplay their instruments is a time-honored June tradition. If you get bored, just fall asleep!

June Carter - Jackson

Hey, we're open to ALL types of June this week! June Carter's a real talent and perfect for any summer playlist. And here's a little trivia: her guitarist/backup singer on this song also did a few records of his own! Kinda underground stuff, you know, with Trent Reznor. Worth checking out, though.

Fill out your favorite June hits and enjoy the long, lovely days. Plus let us also just remind you: some images come from the corresponding Wikipedia page and are here under fair use. See you next week.
